Common Diagnoses of Patients Requiring Physical Therapy
Wool PT specializes in the treatment of a variety of physical conditions, including but not limited to the common maladies listed below.
Infant Hip Dysplasia
Known as developmental dysplasia of the hip, takes place when a baby’s acetabulum is too shallow to cover the head of the femur for appropriate fit and development. Depending on the severity of the bone structure baby may need casting and/or surgery.
After casting and/or surgery physical therapy will promote muscle strengthening required for proper joint position and development. Physical therapy will address any developmental delays as a result of casting.
Prematurity and Developmental Delays
When a child is born prior to the 40 week due date. Preterm birth may lead to a number of medical and developmental complications. The child is not meeting her age appropriate milestones in comparison to her peers.
Physical therapy will address milestone development concerns allowing the child to catch up to their age group by 2 y/o.
Dyspraxia
Dyspraxia is a neurological disorder. Signs and symptoms include lack of balance, poor coordination skills, and decreased body awareness.
Physical therapy focuses on promoting ability to plan and perform motor skills through a variety of exercises focused on symmetrical and asymmetrical movement patterns.
Cerebral Palsy
Direct result of brain damage during the first months of life. Varies in severity affecting the child’s muscle tone, strength, balance, posture development, and gross motor movement skills.
Physical therapy focuses on promoting appropriate muscle tone through stretches, theraputic massage and active/passive range of motion exercises. Physical therapy will focus on promoting age appropriate strength, coordination and balance development. In addition PT will provide parents with any required equipment recommendations to promote child’s independence.
Spina Bifida
Takes place when the child’s spinal cord fails to develop or close appropriately. Orthopedic, walking and mobility complications vary in severity.
PT address strength, balance and endurance deficits promoting child’s gross motor development. In addition PT will provide parents with any required equipment recommendations to promote child’s independence.
Down Syndrome and other Chromosomal abnormalities
Genetic disorder which results in extra ( in other cases deletion) genetic material on the involved chromosome. Children present with general muscle weakness and delayed milestone development.
Physical therapy focuses on promoting appropriate muscle strength and motor skills development required for age appropriate milestone development and functional independence.
Abnormalities of gait, posture and mobility
This includes Scoliosis, Tiptoe walking, In-toeing or Put-toeing
Physical therapy focuses on addressing the cause of the structural misalignment promoting appropriate postural and gait development thus preventing any further abnormalities.
Autism
Impacts the development of nervous system. It presents with a variety of signs and varies in severity. Children typically present with lack of balance, safety awareness, coordination and age appropriate muscle strength.
Physical therapy addresses the concerns of strength, balance, coordination, and safety through the variety of playful exercises. Physical therapy will promote the child’s confidence and age appropriate playground skills.
Torticollis
Abnormal development of the neck muscle due to muscle spasm result in a head tilt and rotation. Abnormal head positioning delays milestone development and may result in inappropriate spine/posture maturity.
Physical therapy addresses the involved muscle spam through stretching, theraputic massage and exercise. Parents are educated on continuing the stretches daily.
Plagiocephaly and Microcephaly
Abnormal development of the skull involving flat spots and size, may result in milestone developmental delays.
Parent education on appropriate child positioning in order to promote appropriate skull shape development. Physical therapy will address any current developmental delays. In addition PT will provide parents with any required equipment recommendations to promote child’s independence.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Muscular Dystrophy
Genetic disorders which leads to weakness and atrophy of muscles. Varies in severity of muscle weakness and muscle movement.
Physical therapy focuses on maximizing available muscle strength and endurance in order to promote the child’s appropriate functional independence.
Congenital Hypotonia
Poor muscle tone and general muscle weakness which maybe hereditary, symptom of a genetic disorder, or caused by prematurity. Hypotonia results in gross motor milestone delays.
Physical therapy promotes age appropriate static and dynamic muscle strength with focus on core muscle development thus promoting age appropriate functional independence.

Sofya had all the qualities that my daughter Sarah Esther needed at the time. It was such a blessing to have a professional therapist like Sofya, she was an amazing teacher. She spent time to show me how I can continue with exercises for my daughter during the week. It was such a great experience to work with someone like her, I will highly recommend her services.
After our daughter's surgeries for hip dysplasia, Sofya showed us a wide range of helpful techniques that helped Emilia develop her strength to allow her to quickly catch up with her peers. We are proud to see her running and playing with her friends, and Sofya had a lot to do with that. We are eternally grateful and fortunate to have found her.
Dr. Wool has been a great support for our family. She has treated our son for one and a half years and the progress has been incredible. She is very professional and charismatic. She makes you feel at ease knowing that your kids are in great hands.

My son Yair has Down Syndrome. When Sofya started working with him at the age of 1, he was barely sitting straight.
